Renee, I don't know the specific genetics, but it seems to be a fairly prevalent condition with abys. Maybe it's their love of junk food. On the other hand, my dear Ben that died last year had great teeth at age 10. He'd never needed a cleaning or an extraction. He was also the king of the junk food abys.

One thing I do know... that veterinary dental health has improved greatly in the last few years. One of the standard recommendations is to brush their teeth daily. It may be too late to start with Nala and Mina, but perhaps there is still a chance you can start with Gizzy and prevent future dental problems. Whether you try one of the finger brushes or just a bit of bandage gauze and some kitty toothpaste, it might be worth a try.
