Maine Coons are not brushed, they are combed. Use a steel Belgian comb for the face and body. If badly matted,you might want to use the services of a professional groomer. I cut out mats by interposing the steel comb horizontally between the skin and some scissors so I don't accidentally cut the skin. For the tail, use a pin brush to groom it, remove dead hair, and fluff it out. Maine Coons tend to mat on their flanks and in their armpits.

Make sure you take this senior cat in for bloodwork to check its kidney and other organ functions. Bless you for taking it in.
