Meet the Manx/Cymric Cat

Closely associated with each other, Cymric (pronounced kim'rik) cats are the long-haired version of Manx cats. The Manx is a naturally occurring, tailless breed of cat that is native to the Isle of Man. In "The Manx Cat," Marjan Swantek speculated that the Cymric cats descended from Norwegian Forest Cats brought to the island with King Mangus of Norway. These Norwegian cats interbred with local cats. "Cymru" is the real name of Wales, and "Cymric" means "Welsh," although the breed is not connected with Wales. Except for the longer hair, Cymric cats are identical to the Manx in appearance, temperament, and health. However, they might have a hint of a tail, unlike the Manx.

Both the Cymric and Manx are exceptionally friendly cats and are people-oriented. Known for their ability to leap and jump, prospective Cymric "parents" should be prepared.

Genetically, both cats can have health problems in their spine, colon, or urinary tract. Their hind quarters may be weakened.
