Meet the American Shorthair
Are you looking for a cat that is a gentle companion, a playmate for the kids, and a full-fledged member of the family? Look no further than the American Shorthair. This breed is also known for its longevity, robust health, amiability with dogs, good looks, and quiet disposition. Being hardy and resistant to cold, they enjoy outdoor forays. Just hanging out indoors with the family is fine with them also. They are affectionate and untemperamental. They have no special dietary requirements and are easy to groom.
Similar to the American Curl, the Shorthair is America's own breed whose ancestors are the cats that came to North America with the early pioneers from Europe. Indeed, records indicate that some of these ancestors arrived on the "Mayflower."
These first cats hunted rats that ate the ship's food supplies and spread diseases to humans. For centuries, these working cats flourished along with their pioneer owners and eventually established themselves as the native North American shorthaired cat. One brown tabby American Shorthair, in 1896, commanded the price of $2,500 at the Second Annual Cat Show at Madison Square Garden.
