Which cat is thought to be descended from the Egyptian cat pictured in hieroglyphics of ancient times? The Abyssinian! Although this connection is not documented, Egyptian hieroglyphics depict cats that look similar to the Abyssinian.

Personality-wise, Abys have a gentle and affectionate nature. Although they can be loud when wanting food or attention, they have soft voices. They need space to run, jump, or climb. They possess a high degree of intelligence and can be easily trained. Loyalty is another of their traits.

The Abyssinian has a muscular body, long legs, and small feet. Males range from 9 to 12 pounds and females from 5 to 7. Known for their unusual coat of many colors, which is composed of layers of color and guard hairs, a single hair may have several bands of color on it. Rather than a tabby pattern, the cat's coat gives the appearance of darker color on the back, head, and outside of the legs with a solid, lighter color on the underside.
