Meet the Siberian
Considered as the "national cat" of Russia, the Siberian made history in an exchange between countries in 1990. Three Siberian cats were imported from Russia by a breeder in the United States. In turn, the breeder sent three of her Himalayans to Russia.
Purebred Russian Siberians have certification of their authenticity from Russia. All cats and kittens sold as Siberians must have an ancestor with such certification.
Weighing from 15 to 20 pounds, Siberians are large, heavy-boned cats. Their bodies appear round and circular. Their head is a modified wedge shape, and they have medium-long lynx-tipped ears. Their medium-long hair has a substantial ruff around the neck. Their thick undercoat requires twice-weekly grooming. Their yellow/green eyes are oval in shape. Siberian cats are mostly brown classic or mackerel tabby in color, although they come in all colors and patterns (except pointed).
Siberians are not especially vocal and "talk" in chirps. They display loyalty and friendliness and are protective of their human family. Climbing is a favorite activity. Health problems may include a predisposition to umbilical hernias, which are easily corrected with surgery. Kinked tails also may be present.
