Meet the Russian Blue/Nebelung

Originally from the northern regions of Russia and Scandinavia, Russian Blues have been called other names: Archangel, Foreign Blue, Spanish, and Maltese. The Maltese was the only name that stayed with this cat until the early 1900s.

In 1875 a Russian Blue appeared in a show for all blue cats. By 1912, Russian Blue had been put into its own class. After World War II, American breeders began crossing British cats with several Scandinavian breeds of cats.

Russian Blues come only in one variety—blue. Their coat is unlike any other cat's coat. It is a double coat that is short, thick, and luxurious, which should be hand groomed daily. The cat's body is long and muscular with fine bones.

These cats are quiet, tame, and loving and show complete devotion and loyalty to their human family. They are also playful and smart and are well suited to life indoors.
